Numaru's Second Cooking Class – Japchae!

Last week, we hosted our second cooking class, this time focusing on japchae. It was a fantastic evening of learning, cooking, and enjoying Korean cuisine together. We had eight participants, ranging from complete beginners to those with a bit of cooking experience. Everyone joined us out of a shared love for Korean food, and there was a real sense of excitement as they got hands-on with the cooking process!

Japchae – Korea’s Famous Stir-Fried Noodles

Japchae is a beloved Korean dish, often served on special occasions. It consists of sweet potato glass noodles stir-fried with an assortment of vegetables (and sometimes meat), all brought together with a rich, savoury-sweet soy sauce seasoning. Originally created in the royal kitchens of the Joseon Dynasty, japchae has since become a staple at celebrations and everyday meals alike. Here’s what makes it special: 1. The combination of chewy sweet potato noodles, crisp vegetables, and tender meat creates a beautifully balanced dish. 2. The glass noodles soak up all the flavours of the sauce while maintaining their signature chewiness. 3. A blend of soy sauce, sesame oil, and sugar gives japchae its irresistible sweet and savoury taste.

What Went Down in the Cooking Class

1. Chef’s Demonstration and Preparation
The evening kicked off with a live demonstration from our chef, who walked the participants through the key ingredients and techniques needed to make authentic japchae. With their newfound knowledge, everyone then got to work chopping vegetables, preparing the noodles, and getting their ingredients ready under the chef’s guidance.

2. Cooking and Tasting
Once everything was prepped, it was time to cook! Participants carefully followed the step-by-step instructions, stir-frying their ingredients to perfection. The best part? Tasting each other’s creations! Some of the feedback we heard included: “It wasn’t as difficult as I expected”, “I didn’t realise how much technique affects the flavour” and “It’s so exciting to make Korean food from scratch!” By the end of the class, everyone had a newfound appreciation for japchae and the joy of cooking it themselves.

And the ‘Best Cook’ Award Goes To…

To add a bit of fun, we wrapped up the session with a ‘Best Cook’ award. The winner was chosen based on their technique, enthusiasm, and presentation skills. As a special treat, they took home a bottle of Bokbunja, a traditional Korean black raspberry wine, to celebrate their achievement.

Join Us for Our Next Class!

Beyond just cooking, this class gave everyone a chance to connect with Korean cuisine in a more immersive way. Participants gained hands-on experience, new cooking skills, and a deeper appreciation for Korean cuisine.
